Going to the eye doctor can be one of the most important appointments that you go to all year long. Individuals with good eyesight generally do not think about visiting an optometrist until there is something wrong with their eyes. However, it is best to visit with an optometrist at least once a year. There are many different changes that can occur to your eyes over the course of a year, and it is important that those changes have not dome structural damage to your eye, or changed your vision. It can be a little scary to visit an optometrist for the first time, so here are a few things that you can expect the first time you visit the optometrist.
The Snellen Chart
Everyone can recognize this iconic chart. The Snellen Chart is the chart with large to small black letters big on the top and small at the bottom. The optometrist will get a general idea of how your vision is. They will have you stand back from the chart and read from top to bottom and from left to right. They will often have you read with both eyes open and then alternate reading it with each eye.
The doctor is going to check to ensure that the muscles in your eyes are working completely as well. The doctor is going to do a number of exercises to ensure that your eyes are able to move properly. Often you will be tasked with looking at a light and following the light around in circle and from side to side. The doctor will also have you tell him or her when the light reaches over a specific point. These just show the optometrist how the muscles in your eyes are working and if you have healthy eye movement.
There are many different problems that can arise in the eye, but one of the most common is pressure. If your eyes have a lot of pressure there can be a lot of structural damage that occurs. The doctor is going to take images of your eyes. This usually consists of looking into a light and the doctor simply taking the images. The pictures are going to show the doctor the anatomy and the health of you eye. This is a very neat part of the appointment because the doctor will often show you the images. Healthy eyes are important, and an optometrist can make sure your eyes are healthy. If they are not, then they will help you correct any problem that comes up.
If you have more questions about what to expect at an eye appointment, talk to optometrists like Evans, Robt. L Dr.
I have never had any issues wearing contact lenses every day, but since landing a job that requires me to use a computer most of the day, my contact lenses were no longer comfortable for me. After about three months of struggling to wear my contact lenses to work, I decided to schedule an appointment with my eye doctor to see what could be done to make it more comfortable for me. I learned a lot about the different products available, some exercises that can be done to help your eyes adapt and several tips for making it more comfortable for me. My blog contains all that information and so much more.
